excerpt: goodbye Timmy Tim, hello EsDeeKid

The Marty Supreme PR run has become a bit too much.

Today we’re looking at the trending conspiracy that’s been plaguing the music world as of late: Is Timotheé Chalamet cosplaying as viral UK rapper EsDeeKid?

This is usually the part where I’d include a brief intro about EsDeeKid, but the thing is…there’s nothing. A lot of the hype surrounding him comes from his anonymity and the aggressive trendy style he carries through his music. From the music alone, we can really only conclude he was born and raised in Liverpool, United Kingdom. Other than that? Nothing. EsDeeKid has only made public appearances wearing face covering and masks. His anonymity, paired with the Timotheé conspiracy, has basically become EsDeeKid’s brand at this point. And we love our masked figures – like MF Doom and M Huncho – so I assume EsDeeKid looks to be following in those same footsteps.

EsDeeKid’s music pulls directly from today’s underground rap scene: distorted bass, chaotic flows, and that full-on rage aesthetic. But even beneath all the noise and glitch, EsDeeKid goes above and beyond. His tracks have structure and intention behind every bar. EsDeeKid in my opinion, easily clears any Carti/Yeat clone allegations.

His most recent project Rebel, dropped earlier this year but has resurfaced thanks to recent hype, racking up millions of streams across platforms. It’s a project that embraces the new digital age of rap, alongside contemporaries like Playboi Carti, Yeat, and fakemink. Rebel is short but straight to the point. EsDeeKid delivers bars about his come-up in Liverpool’s slums, while flexing his current lavish lifestyle, Mixing in cultural references to Lil Uzi Vert, Forza, and The Devil Wears Prada to name a few. What impresses me most about this record is the non-stop energy. One reason I don’t fully dive into this new underground wave of rap is that a lot of the songs end up feeling stale – once you hear one, you’ve heard most of them. On the surface, EsDeeKid’s might seem to fit this mold, but there’s just something different about this. Listening to Rebel, I never felt the need to skip or breeze past a song. Every moment on this record seems to have intention and a certain tenacity. And the internet seems to have finally caught up with the Liverpool born rapper.

We haven’t even spoken about one of the main reasons why EsDeeKid has been trending as of late – and honestly, the greatest thing to come out of all this – the conspiracy that Timotheé Chalamet is EsDeeKid himself. It’s hilarious that neither Timotheé nor EsDeeKid has come out to deny these claims. Are they in on it, or are they just the same person? Internet detectives are working overtime to solve this mystery.

Speculation started when Timotheé Chalamet was spotted at a fakemink concert earlier this year. fakemink happens to be a frequent EsDeeKid collaborator – just saying. Both the artist and the actor are similar in height and even seem to share the same wardrobe. They’ve both sported the same skull bandana. Coincidence? I think not.

We’ve also got people lining up Timotheé’s jawline with the silhouette of EsDeeKid’s mask. My favorite one is from a reddit thread claiming EsDeeKid’s fingernails look “too actor-like.” God forbid a man takes care of his fingernails.

Detectives have gone as far as saying that Timotheé and EsDeeKid share the same arm gestures – particularly noting the movements from that one SNL skit where Timotheé portrays a SoundCloud rapper. It’s funny going back to Rebel now, because what if it really is Timotheé putting on a heavy Scouse accent and rapping about a tough upbringing in the Liverpool trenches? He is an actor after all, so I don’t see it as an impossibility.

Regardless of whether Timotheé Chalamet is EsDeeKid or not, it’s been fun being part of this not-so-crazy conspiracy. Never say never, right? Neither the actor nor the rapper has come out to deny the rumors. EsDeeKid is hitting the road early next year, so maybe an actual face reveal is in the cards. Conspiracy aside, it’s good to see some buzz coming from the UK rap scene – it’s been dormant for quite some time now. We’ll just have to wait and see whether EsDeeKid does something big with all the hype surrounding him.
